2022 Subaru WRX Comes With Bit More Power, New Platform, New Looks
Subaru did not reveal the pricing details yet.
Subaru introduced the all-wheel-drive 2022 WRX yesterday, boasting new features inside and out. The fifth-generation WRX rides on a new platform and uses a new engine. On the first look, you might not find many changes, but the automaker did update many features along with its performance. For the 2022 Subaru WRX, we got a new flagship GT model, as well.
The automaker has ditched the 2.0-litre for 2.4-litre engine generating 271 horsepower (202 kilowatts) and 258 pound-feet (349 Newton-meters) of torque from 2,000-5,200 rpm. While the new engine just makes three more horsepower than the outgoing model, the torque would remain the same.
The mill mates to either a six-speed manual or the Subaru Performance Transmission. It is a Continuously Variable Transmission that sends power via Subaru’s AWD system. The CVT boasts an eight-speed manual mode you can use via the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Subaru is also offering an external transmission fluid cooler.
Fans looking for more power might feel disappointed, but the 2022 Subaru WRX makes up for this with its Global Platform, offering various upgrades. The engineers have improved the chassis stiffness – it is a 28% enhancement in overall torsional rigidity and a 75% boost in suspension mounting point rigidity. It would assist the vehicle in lowering its centre of gravity. Another change is replacing the subframe with a stabiliser bar.
The 2022 Subaru WRX gets new styling thanks to the new LED headlights, the company’s signature hexagonal grille, which is bigger than before, and a large, wide hood scoop. Less noticeable modifications include things like aluminium front fenders that reduce the weight by five pounds. At the back, we see new taillights that illuminate like volcanic magma.
For an ultimate grand touring experience, Subaru has introduced the GT model, which comes exclusively with automatic transmission only and electronically controlled dampers. Comfort, Normal, and Sport settings connect with a new Drive Mode Select to render driver 430 unique customisation choices.
The 2022 Subaru WRX GT features Recaro seats with an eight-way power driver’s seat covered in black Ultrasuede with red contrast stitching. The wheels are 18-inch matte-grey with 245/40 R18 summer performance tires. Other models in the lineup are available with either 17- or 18-inch alloys.
The 2022 Subaru WRX comes with a new interior layout boasting an 11.6-inch infotainment display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity is available for every model, and so is Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. An 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is optional.
Subaru did not reveal the pricing details yet, but we can tell it will be a little higher than the 2021 model, which sells for over $27,000. As the WRX is here, we are impatiently waiting for the hot WRX STI, which will probably debut next summer.
