Toyota Introduces GR Yaris Hot Hatch in Tokyo
It will hit the assembly lines of the Motomachi factory very soon.
At the 2020 Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota surprised the crowd with GR Yaris boasting the world’s most powerful three-cylinder engine. The hot hatchback supersedes the regular Yaris in every department; it generates a whopping power, has a manual transmission, and spins all the wheels for supreme driving pleasure.
Starting with the engine, this is Toyota’s new creation; the turbocharged 1.6L 3-cylinder generates 257 horsepower (268 hp for JDM-spec car) and a huge 360 Newton-meters of torque channeled to all the wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
The AWD and the two Torsion limited-slip differentials do not add much weight to the Toyota GR Yaris thanks to construction tweaks. The three-door vehicle only weighs 1,280 kilograms. The low weight enables it to be very quick on its toes as well as on the straight line. It can sprint to 100 km/h from a standstill in less than five and a half seconds. The top speed is limited to 230 km/h.
The double-wishbone rear suspension and the MacPherson strut front suspension both are newly built for the GR Yaris. The small car has three drive modes: Normal, Sport and Track to handle different driving conditions. Selecting any of these allows the car to intelligently shift torque to different wheels.
The Toyota GR Yaris will hit the assembly lines of the Motomachi factory very soon. The facility has a dedicated place to create just GR vehicles. The automaker will first roll out First Edition GR Yaris models wearing a price tag of $36,100. Those who want to stand out can opt for High-Performance First Edition GR Yaris with extra goodies.
