New Mercedes-Benz GLS Debuts in New York
It is being developed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The S-Class of Premium SUVs, the new Mercedes-Benz GLS has made its international debut at the 2019 New York Auto Show. Dubbed as the automaker’s biggest and most luxurious SUV, it is 77 mm longer and 22 mm wider than its predecessor. The 60 mm longer wheelbase means occupants would be happy to find more space inside, especially in the 2nd row. All the seats in 2nd and 3rd row are electronically adjustable.
There are two powertrain options; the first is a six-cylinder in-line engine electrified with 48-volt technology. It creates 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. The EQ Boost, which is available in every powertrain of GLS, offers an additional 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW/22 hp. The second powertrain comprises of an electrified V8 petrol engine with 48-volt onboard electrical system pumping out 360 kW (489 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. The EQ Boost renders the same power boost as available in the V6 engine. Both the engines are mated to a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission.
The E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension system provides excellent suspension convenience, quick handling, and better off-road ability. The new Mercedes-Benz GLS gets the new generation of Mercedes driving assistance systems for a safer drive. The convenience of passengers is ensured through MBUX Rear Seat Entertainment System, Rear Comfort packages, electrically adjustable seats, and five-zone climate control.
“The GLS combines modern luxury with the character of an off-roader,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. “Powerful highlights of the off-road design idiom combine with an elegance reminiscent of a classic luxury saloon. The interior is a synthesis of modern, luxurious aesthetics, hallmark SUV practicality, and digital high-tech. In our view, the new GLS, therefore, offers the best of all these worlds.”
